Safety Tips for ATV Trail Riding

ATV’s can be used for both work and pleasure. One of the most popular fun activities for ATV lovers is riding on the trails, but before you go It’s imperative that you understand some basic ATV safety tips. Here are some guidelines to follow when ATV trail riding.
What To Wear ATV Trail Riding
Always wear protective gear when ATV trail riding. This includes a helmet, gloves, protective eyewear, tall boots, long sleeve shirt, and pants. You do not want any bare skin showing because the trails can surprise you with brush and debris in your path.
Never Drive Under The Influence
In addition to being illegal, drugs and alcohol can severely impair your judgment, reaction time, and ability to drive your ATV. You could seriously hurt or kill yourself, or others. Drive sober!
Follow The Rules Of Use
ATVS are meant for off road use, so avoid operating it on paved roads, unless you are safely crossing the street. Additionally do not exceed the amount of riders that your ATV is designed for, or you could risk damaging your equipment.
Stay On Designated Trails
There are a ton of parks, and public trails available for ATV use. Just be sure before you head out on your adventure that the trail you plan to take is designated for ATV use. Be courteous and stay on designated trails.
Pay Attention To The Trail
Keeping your eyes on the path and hands on your handlebars should be priority at all times. You need both hands and your complete attention to safely operate an ATV.
Tell Someone Your Plan
If you decide to go ATV trail riding alone, make sure you tell someone about your plans. Make sure you explain exactly where you plan to go and when you expect to be back. Plan to check in with this person a couple times during your ride.
Pack For Your Trip
Plan to pack an emergency kit to have nearby in case something happens on the trail where you are hurt, lost, or need help.
Some examples of what the the kit should include are:
- a whistle extra fuel Snacks like beef jerky
- protein bars
- trail mix
- Water
- blanket jacket/windbreaker
- insect repellant
- sunblock
- flashlight
- first aid kit
- spare keys for your ATV
- sharp knife
- compass
- map of the area you are in
In addition to the above trail riding safety tips, check your equipment before you go! This includes verifying that brake lights, engine and other parts of your ATV are in good condition and working order before you hit the trail.
