What is an Avalanche Probe?
Posted by Explore Gear Outdoors on 10th Feb 2023
It’s a good idea to carry an avalanche probe if you are planning a trek in the backcountry. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and other winter activities can come with risks. If you are heading out into freshly fallen snow, it’s a good idea to bring an avalanche probe. What is an avalanche probe and how is it useful? Learn more here:
What’s An Avalanche Probe?
An avalanche probe looks like a walking stick and is used to locate people and objects that could be trapped beneath snow. Specifically, if an avalanche recently took place, you may be looking for missing hikers.
An avalanche probe works by helping you to pinpoint exactly how far beneath the surface of snow a person or object is buried, and can expedite the amount of time it takes to pull off a potential rescue. This probe is an essential piece of equipment.
Aluminum Versus Carbon Fiber Avalanche Probes
When deciding on the correct avalanche probe for your needs, consider what material you want. Typically there are two broad categories of materials: aluminum and carbon fiber poles. What is the difference between the two?
- Carbon fiber is significantly lighter than aluminum, but can be costly. If you plan to be covering a large distance, weight may be a deciding factor in your choice.
- In contrast, aluminum is going to be slightly heavier. The heavier material can penetrate tough, dense snow quickly. Once an avalanche occurs, the snow settles fast therefore feeling much heavier. Aluminum probes are known to be durable, longer, and heavier than carbon fiber. If you want to penetrate thick and heavy snow, this material is a better choice.
Consider the materials when you think about the type of avalanche probe that you need. How far are you treking? Ultimately, the avalanche probe that you choose should be easy to deploy, use, and draw. It is a good idea for you to practice using your avalanche probe at home before you hit the trail.
Who Should Carry an Avalanche Probe?
Not everyone is going to need to carry an avalanche probe. Emergency services are more likely to need to use one, such as a member of a ski patrol crew.
If you plan to ski, snowboard, or snowshoe anywhere significant, then you need to make sure that you have the right safety gear. This means carrying an avalanche probe with you in the event of an emergency.
