From Wisconsin’s Rush to the Ocean’s Flow: Kyle Parker Embarks on an Epic Paddling Journey

From Wisconsin's Rush to the Ocean's Flow: Kyle Parker Embarks on an Epic Paddling Journey

In September 2024, Kyle Parker etched his name in paddling history by setting the fastest known time solo canoeing the Wisconsin River. Blazing from the Upper Peninsula border to the Mississippi, he shaved an astounding eight hours off the previous record. This wasn’t a leisurely paddle; averaging 17 hours on the water daily with a mere 3-5 hours of sleep, Parker’s focus was purely on speed.

Now, with the echoes of the Wisconsin’s currents still fresh, Parker is setting his sights on an even more ambitious undertaking: a continuous paddling journey from Washington state all the way to the Florida Keys. The plan is to begin this incredible adventure on May 1st of 2025. This new adventure, born from the thought that if he were to tackle the Mississippi, he might as well continue to the ocean, this culminates in his desire to fish for Bonefish in the renowned waters of the Keys.

During his record-breaking Wisconsin River trip, efficiency was paramount. Reflecting on his key learnings about gear, Parker emphasizes a strict one-week usability rule. “If it’s something that you won’t use within one week, you do not need it,” he states. While acknowledging the necessity of essentials like a stove, frying pan, and socks, he cautions against unnecessary multiples. However, he stresses the importance of redundancy for critical items such as fire-starting tools.

Evolving Gear for a Continent-Spanning Paddle

The upcoming Washington-to-Florida expedition presents a different set of challenges, demanding a shift in gear strategy. Unlike the Wisconsin River trip, where a support vehicle offered flexibility, this journey requires Parker to be entirely self-sufficient. “In Wisconsin, in the canoe, I really only had my clothes, water jug, and a granola bar,” he recalls. The vastly diverse weather conditions expected along the transcontinental route necessitate a more comprehensive packing approach. To prepare, Parker has invested in an upgraded sleeping pad and a new canoe, a Swift solo cruiser 17.8. Adding a unique element to his propulsion, he’s also acquired a sail from Falcon Kayak Sails.

When it comes to sustenance on the water, Parker keeps it simple. His go-to “camp meal” is often a humble peanut butter and jelly sandwich, occasionally elevated by a quick fry in his pan on his Optimus stove. For the most basic of cooking needs, Tuna packets, or summer sausage will suffice. Despite the minimalist approach to many items, some personal belongings are non-negotiable for Parker. A notebook for observations and reflections, and a deck of cards for moments of downtime, are essential companions on his long voyages.

Reflecting on his Wisconsin River Solo Canoeing record setting voyage, Parker recounts an unexpected gear failure: “Flex tape for a leaky canoe.” This experience has undoubtedly reinforced the importance of preparedness and having reliable repair solutions on hand for the upcoming, more demanding journey.

Looking Beyond the Finish Line: Goals for the Next Adventure

While completing the Washington-to-Florida paddle is a clear objective, Parker’s hopes for this expedition extend beyond mere achievement. “I think the main goal is to just slow down and enjoy it; whether that’s a sunset, the people you meet along the way, or one night having a really great campsite and remembering to enjoy it.” he expresses, revealing a desire for a more immersive and less hurried experience. He also hopes to encounter some buffalo along his route.

For Parker, the allure of extended time on the water lies in the solitude it offers. This opportunity for introspection and connection with nature fuels his passion for these long-distance endeavors.

When asked what advice he would offer to someone contemplating their own long paddling adventure, Parker’s response is straightforward and encouraging: “Where do I start, what should I do, what should I bring? You just have to start somewhere, slow down, think about it critically and start planning it… and leave your job.” His words emphasize the importance of taking the initial step, thoughtful planning, and embracing the journey.

As Kyle Parker prepares to dip his paddle into the waters of Washington, embarking on this incredible odyssey to the Florida Keys, his journey will undoubtedly be one of resilience, adaptation, and a renewed appreciation for the simple beauty of life on the water.
